iCON Chinese Health Forum empowered patients and caregivers to manage dementia

UBC’s interCultural Online health Network (iCON), supported by the BC Ministry of Health’s Patients as Partners Initiative, successfully hosted a virtual Chinese Health Forum “Take Charge of Your Health: Dementia 360” on December 11-12, 2021. The goal of the Forum was to help patients and caregivers optimize their quality of life by empowering them with knowledge and resources to manage dementia. A total of 1,688 participants, primarily patient and their families, attended the Forum (including participant views from both days) and a strong roster of 19 community and media partners were engaged to support and promote the Forum. Nine interdisciplinary expert speakers delivered their presentations in Cantonese, with simultaneous translation into Mandarin and English. The Chinese Health Forum sessions saw an engaged and interested audience with 97% of respondents indicating they had a better understanding of the learning objectives i.e. obtaining knowledge that empowers them to manage dementia. Furthermore, 98% of respondents indicated they were better able to find resources for wellbeing in their community.
